Go For It (August 21 - A.M. Service)

"C'mon man!"

Monday Night Football on ESPN (which, for all you Football Fanatics is only 16 days away - Hallelujah! Thank you, Jesus, for saving the NFL season!) does a segment each week called, "C'mon man!" It's a brief commentary on the mishaps of the Sunday afternoon games ... all the plays that went so horribly wrong that really there's nothing to be said, except, "C'mon man!" The center snaps the ball 10 feet over the quarterback's head, the quarterback throws the ball 10 feet over the wide open receiver's head ... "C'mon man!" The offensive line doesn't block, the defensive line doesn't tackle; the ref makes a terrible call, the coach makes even a worse one; the running back stumbles and then fumbles; the end zone dance goes terribly wrong or looks terribly bad ... go ahead, say it with me: "C'mon man!"

The "C'mon man!" moments of the NFL are pretty funny, even at times hilarious ... the "C'mon man! moments of life however, not so much.

In Numbers 13 and then again in Deuteronomy 1, you can read the story of Israel as they stand at the very borders of the Promised Land ... able to see for the first time, this land of "milk and honey" that God had given to them. Prior to this moment, it had been 435 years of slavery and oppression in Egypt for the Israelites. But now, in response to their cries for help and in fulfillment of His Word and His divine promises and perfect plans for His people, God has come to set them free. And He does it in a most miraculous fashion, doesn't He? It's the ten plagues by which He brings total devastation to Egypt and absolute salvation to Israel. It's divine favor by which the Israelite slaves plunder the gold and the silver of the Egyptian masters ... by simply asking for it all. It's manna from heavens; it's water from the rocks. It's the very voice of God thundering from Mt. Sinai and it's the very presence of God in the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. It's miraculous protection and provision, it's divine safety and support, it's supernatural guidance and goodness ... and it's all that every step of their journey. And now, here they stand, then - a free people ... about to receive one more miracle from God: an entire land miraculously provided for them. Except ... they mess it all up. By a super majority of a 10 to 2 vote, they say "no" to God's promise, and "no" to the Promised Land. Why? What would ever make them do that? Well, according to Deuteronomy 1:32, they turned away in fear very simply because they "did not trust in the Lord their God." What? After all God had done for them? How are they not going to trust God ... when He's done all that He's done up to this point, what would ever make them think that He's going to give up on them now? They didn't trust in the Lord? After all that God had done to Egypt, the "super power" of the day? After all the miracles God had performed? After all that God had delivered them from? How are they now going to let the "giants" in this land intimidate them? All of a sudden, they're going to not trust in the Lord their God? Go ahead, one more time, say it with me: "C'mon man!"

Actually, before we're too hard on the Israelites, maybe we need to take a moment and evaluate our own lives. How about it ... like me, have you discovered that sometimes it's hard to obey God? I'm not necessarily talking about the daily struggle that takes place within us ... the struggle to live by the Spirit or live in the flesh ... the struggle to keep the old sinful man crucified and Christ still living in and through us ... the moment by moment, situation by situation struggle to be like Jesus - to do what He would do, say what He would say. No doubt all of us know what it is to stand on those battle lines every single day! But the difficulty in obedience there, that's not really what I'm talking about. I'm thinking more of the special thing that God would specifically ask of us. You know what I mean, right? It's that moment when God asks you to do something ... and as much as you love Him and want to be obedient to Him, you struggle in obeying and doing what He's asked and in fact the real reality is that your initial thought in that moment is, "God, there's no way I can do that." God sometimes calls us to do something big, doesn't He? And when He does, let's just be honest, we can really struggle in giving ourselves wholly and completely to Him in obedience. I wonder ... is God calling you to something big even right now? Maybe He is ... and maybe you're struggling to obey Him. Maybe by way of miracle after miracle, God has brought you to something great ... you stand at the very entrance of your own God-given Promised Land. It's yours for the taking ... all you have to do is obey Him; all you have to do is "go up and take possession of it as the Lord your God has commanded you." Maybe that's you ... and maybe like the Israelites, you're in danger of messing it all up; you're in danger of turning away in disobedience.

Don't!

Don't do it!

Don't not obey Him!

Instead, go for it!

1. Know that God loves you!
I know it seems a bit trivial, doesn't it? After all, surely we all know that God loves us, right? But how about this ... not only does God love you, He loves you even when you're struggling to obey Him. You see it's one thing, I think, to say that God loves me, even that God loves me all the time ... but then to speak of the specifics of that - all the time means when I'm struggling to obey Him. God loves me all the time, so He loves me even then! When I'm not sure I'm wanting or going to do what He's asked of me - God's response to me in those moments is to assure me of His love. To love me even at all is excessive ... to love me when I'm having difficulty obeying - well, that's exorbitantly excessive! It's too much, isn't it? He loves us too much ... but oh, we're so glad that He does, aren't we?

2. Remember the Word is from the Lord!
It was God that was giving the Land to the Israelites. It was God commanding them to not be afraid, to not be discouraged ... to go up and take possession of it. It was God's plan; it was God's will. It was God's promise to them. It was a Word from the Lord.

We would do well to remember, the instruction we have received - oh, it's big, even in fact it's huge ... but it's also a Word from the Lord.

God's called you to something big, hasn't He? And you're struggling to obey Him in it, aren't you? If that's true, then I think it's also true that this would be of help for you today: remember, that which you've been asked to do, it's from the Lord. It's not some crazy idea you've randomly come up with. It's not nonsense. It's not foolishness. It's not an absurdity. It's not an impossibility. I know, it doesn't make sense; you can't understand it or figure it out ... I know, it's so far-fetched; it's mind-boggling, it's improbable and implausible ... I know, it seems way too big ... I know, there are a "gazillion and one" reasons why that could never happen. But I know this too ... if it's God's Word, none of that matters.

3. The Word is good, but the giants are big!
As the Israelites stood and looked into the Promised Land, they saw the milk and the honey; they saw the produce of the land; they saw the goodness of it ... but then they saw the giants in it. And they lost heart; and they lost courage; and they lost trust in the Lord their God; and ultimately they lost the very promise itself ... all because of the giants.

Israel's story is your story, isn't it? You see all that's good about what God is asking you to do ... but be honest, like Israel, you especially see the giants, don't you? All those questions, all those doubts, all those reasons why you could never do what He's asked, all those reasons why you shouldn't do what He's asked, all the common sense logic that makes what He's asking seem to be so absurd ... that's right - those are the giants in the land. Amazing how noticeably visible they are ... standing before us in 3D, HD kind of clarity, right? They're there, no doubt about it. And they're big aren't they? I mean, they're make-you-look-like-a-grasshopper big, right? And they're strong and intimidating. Stare long enough and they'll make you do like Israel did - run in the other direction.

It would be nice if God only called us to giant-free lands ... but He doesn't and He won't. In fact, the truth of the matter, when you look over into what God has called you to do, where God has called you to go ... you will always see giants there. And they'll always serve as a reason to not go forward, to give up, to not obey ... they'll always threaten to compromise the fulfillment of God's promises and God's blessing in your life!

4. The Word will always demand a response of faith!
It's true ... all because of those malicious giants. They're bigger than you and they're stronger than you ... and to go forward to face them is going to require then a step of faith from you. Or maybe better to say it this way: when God calls you to do something, something big, and you look to what He's calling you to do and you see the giants, and they're even bigger ... in that moment, you're going to either move forward in obedience because of faith, or you're going to move back in disobedience because of fear.

Faith vs. Fear ... that's the battle that wins the war of obedience vs. disobedience. Faith vs. Fear ... that's the battle then that we must win.

You see, your faith - it's everything! If you falter in it, you'll fail then in obedience. If all you can see are the giants, if all you're focused on is how tall they look and how small they make you feel - then you're going to be afraid; you're going to be very afraid ... you're going to feed your fear until you've starved to death your faith and then you won't obey, you won't do what He's asked, you won't go for it. However; if you can fix your eyes on Jesus, "the author and perfecter of your faith," you'll see that He's even bigger and stronger than the giants; you'll realize He's with you and He's for you; you'll remember that there's nothing impossible for Him, there's nothing He cannot do ... and in that moment faith will arise in your heart to first banish fear and then to move you forward in obedience to God.

5. The Word leads to blessing!
The simple reality is this: if we disobey, we lose. If we disobey, we miss out ... we miss out on the miracle, we miss out on the opportunity, we miss out on seeing the power of God work supernaturally and miraculously to fulfill the promises of God. If we disobey, we exchange life in the Promised Land for death in the wilderness wandering. If we disobey, it's all bad!

Why would we ever want to disobey then, right? We don't want to do that ... not ever! We don't want any of those things ... we want the exact opposite, in fact. We don't want to miss out ... we want to experience the miracle, we want to take advantage of the opportunity, we want to see God's power put on display both in us and through us. We want the life in the Promised Land. We want the all good! And what we come to discover, by way of the story of the Israelites as well as simple deduction ... if what you get when you disobey is exactly opposite of what you want, then to get the things you do want you do the opposite of disobey. Let me give me you a one word clarification of all that: Obey!

I know that what God has asked you to do is a big deal. I understand that you don't know if you can do it ... you maybe, in all honesty, don't think you can. I say to you, though: Go for it! Go for it ... it is God calling you! That is His voice you've heard! It is His perfect plan for your life ... it really is! I say: Go for it ... oh, I know the giants are big, but forget about them and focus instead on your God who is much, much bigger! Go for it ... step out in faith, walk the walk of faith - you can trust your God ... He will not disappoint you. I say: Go for it ... don't miss out; choose obedience and receive the life and blessing that comes with it!

The Pursuit of Excellence (August 14 - A.M. Service)

"Excellence is a difficult concept to communicate because it can easily be misread as neurotic perfectionism or snooty sophistication.
But it is neither. On the contrary, it is the stuff of which
greatness is made. It is the difference between just getting by and soaring – that which sets apart the significant from
the superficial, the lasting from the temporary.”
Charles Swindoll

A-OK. Blue-Ribbon. Dandy. Fantabulous. First-Class. Five-Star. Gangbusters. Groovy. Jim-Dandy. Nifty. Numero Uno. Peachy Keen. Primo. Stellar. Tip-Top. Top-Shelf. Out of this world.

Quite the list of expressions, isn't it? My challenge for you: try to use all of them at least once in the course of your every day conversations throughout the next week. Your friends will be incredibly impressed and amazed by the extent of your vocabulary . . . or, they'll get a good chuckle out of the absurdity of it - either way, it'll be good times!

Actually, the challenge is a bit more than that. According to Webster, all of those words are simply synonyms for the one word, excellence. Go ahead . . . say that word out loud. "Excellence." Think about it for a moment. Excellence. Officially it's defined simply as "the quality of being excellent." Pretty plain and straightforward definition, isn't it? How would you define it though? Maybe like others, you would think of excellence as "the possession of good qualities in an unusual degree." Maybe you would echo the words of Booker T. Washington who said, "Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way." Maybe you would define it more by what it's not - excellence is not mediocrity, it's not just going along with the status quo, nor is it just doing enough to get by. When Jennifer and I have all our kids out with us, I'll typically give them "a talk" before we exit the van and step out into public. And, though at times the talk may include quite a lengthy description of how much trouble they'll be in and how hard the paddling will be if they misbehave, typically it consists of only four words: "Better than your best!" Maybe like me, that's how you would define excellence - it's the best. It's the best you can be, it's the best you can give, it's the best you can do, it's your best and nothing but your best in any and every situation . . . even, in fact, it's better than your best in all that.

My real challenge for you then is to not just incorporate the synonyms for excellence into your everyday speech . . . but instead to incorporate the qualities of excellence into your everyday life.

Think of it for a moment . . . Excellence in your walk with God? Doesn't that sound, for lack of a better word, excellent? How about in your relationships . . . how about "Excellent" in front of all the titles that you carry: Excellent Husband/Wife, Excellent Father/Mother, Excellent Worker, Excellent Boss, Excellent Friend, Excellent Neighbor, Excellent Customer. You get the picture, right? Wow! what a difference excellence makes! Let's pursue it then . . . with everything and in everything.

1. Remember
In our spiritual lives, our pursuit for excellence will be helped along by pausing to reflect and remember the nature of God. Think about it for a moment . . . He is God. He is the Creator of all the earth - everything in it and on it. He is the Almighty God, He rules and reigns over everything - there is nothing that can stand against Him or stop Him, there is nothing above Him or like Him. Remember . . . He's all wise. He's all knowing. He's all powerful - there's nothing that's impossible or even difficult for Him to do. He is perfect and pure. He is holy, holy, holy. He always and only does right and good. Because of who He is and what He's done, He deserves all the glory and all the honor and all the praise from all creation. And remember most of all . . . when we were at our worst, He gave us His best, He gave us Jesus. Let me put it to you this way . . . if anyone deserves excellence from us, it's Him. He deserves it. He demands it. And as we live our lives reflecting and representing Him to this world, He expects that we live it.

2. Commitment
Unless there's a commitment to excellence, there will never be a pursuit of excellence and certainly never an attaining of it. And the commitment that excellence requires . . . well it's a real deal kind of a commitment. It's a true, sincere, heartfelt kind of commitment. It's a no-matter-what-it-takes, even-when-I-don't-want-to-or-feel-like-it kind of commitment. It's a commitment without compromise. It's a commitment that refuses to be side-tracked or distracted. It's a commitment that demands results . . . and ultimately it's a commitment that gets them.
Only the things that we're truly committed to will take precedence and priority in our lives . . . and excellence must be one of those things.

3. Sacrifice
Excellence demands sacrifice. No matter how hard that is to hear, anyone who's ever achieved excellence in anything will tell you it's true. We like for things to come easy though don't we? We want little effort and a whole lot of reward - isn't that true? We want the "A" without having to study or do the homework. We want the promotion in status and pay without having to take on the extra hours and responsibilities. We want the good doctor's report and the smaller sized clothes . . . but we don't want to go to the gym and we certainly don't want to have to change our habits of lazy-boy lounging and saturated-fat snacking. We want revival, we want signs and wonders and everyone to receive a miracle, we want God to show up . . . and we want it all to happen without it costing us anything. We want excellence without sacrifice . . . but it just doesn't happen that way.
Are we willing to pursue excellence? Better maybe to ask: are we willing to sacrifice? How about it . . . are you willing to sacrifice the easy way for the excellent one? Are you willing to sacrifice the "just enough to get by" philosophy for a "better than best" one? Are you willing to sacrifice your time, your effort, your energy . . . even in fact anything and everything that would stand in the way of your pursuit of excellence?
Excellence demands sacrifice . . . it always has and it always will.

4. Courage
Maybe as you read this, you're beginning to think of all the areas in your life wherein you desire to truly and sincerely pursue excellence. You maybe sense a cry from your own spirit, "I do want to experience excellence in my walk with God! I do want to have an excellent marriage! I do want to be an excellent parent and/or son or daughter. I do want excellence in everything!" I think we especially sense that inner longing as we recognize the areas wherein we need to do better in pursuing excellence. Maybe like me, you think you're doing fine with God, your spouse, your kids, and everyone else . . . until you're confronted by excellence, until you're forced to consider - not just fine, but excellence in those things. All of a sudden, we realize there's work to be done don't we? And the question then: How can I achieve that excellence? How do I get from here to there? The reality, I don't have that answer for you. I don't know what you'll need to do because I don't know the situation and circumstances of your life. What I do know though, it's going to take courage on your part to make it happen. You're going have to step up and step out . . . and that's going to take courage. You're maybe going to have to do something you've never done before, you're maybe going to have to move out of your comfort zone - in other words, you may have to do something you've never done and don't want to do . . . and that's going to take courage. You're going to make commitments that are going to cost you . . . and that's going to take courage. You're going to have to set yourself apart from the status quo . . . and that's going to take courage.
Excellence can be a fearful thing . . . but how about this: let's chose to fear mediocrity instead and demand from ourselves then the courage to pursue excellence.

5. Perseverance
"There will always be a reason to offer God less than our best." When I read that the other day, I realized that the pursuit of excellence was going to be a lifelong journey. There will always be the temptation to think that God doesn't mind us giving less than our best . . . there will always be the inclination to settle in our relationship with Jesus - to be fine with just fine . . . there will always be the easy and expedient thing that would threaten the excellent thing . . . and so then, we must always persevere in pursuing excellence.
"There will always be a reason to offer less than our best" - that's true in our relationship with God and it's true in every other area of our lives as well. And so we fight for excellence - today, tomorrow, all the time, every time . . . because it's worth fighting for!

Lord, help me to run after excellence . . . and never stop! Amen.

Here's Your Sign (August 7 - A.M. Service)

Over the past few weeks, a number of the folks here at New Life have experienced real answers to prayer! No doubt about it - God has done the miraculous on their behalf. One of the ladies of the church experienced the reality of Exodus 15:26 - God was her healer! In the middle of a Sunday morning service, God touched her hand - now the pain she had been experiencing in it is gone, and strength and mobility have returned. Another had a substantial financial miracle. Paul tells us in Philippians 4:19 that God will meet all our needs according to His wonderful riches in Christ Jesus. This lady learned that by way of a check in the mail that will take care of her for the next few months while she continues to search for a job. Still another in the church discovered that God really does do far more for us that we would ever dare to ask or even imagine - infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes (Ephesians 3:20). It's a little bit of an old school expression but nevertheless still true for this couple: "God blessed their socks off!"

As I was reflecting on these miracle stories, I couldn't help but be reminded of how good God is. In Psalm 119, the Psalmist lets us to know that "God is good and what He does is good!" I think it's probably one of my most favorite verses in the Bible ... and yet after these testimonies, I'm wondering if the Psalmist's description is a bit of an understatement. Our awesome God - He is a prayer-answering, life-changing, circumstance-redeeming, miracle-working God, isn't He. He is good, good, good ... all the time good! Spending time meditating on the reality of that will sure go a long way in building your faith and your confidence in God to help you in your circumstances. It will stir you to new heights in your passion for praise and worship ... our God who is good like that is truly deserving of all the praise, and all the glory, and all the honor all the time after all! Ultimately, it helps to build such a sense of excitement and anticipation for every time the church gets together! There's a new found expectation around here that every time we get together, God's going to take a prayer request and turn it into this week's testimony ... and we just can't wait to see that happen!

No doubt, hearing a miracle story is good ... it's fun to hear the amazing things God has done, isn't it? On the other hand, miracle stories sometimes just remind us of what God hasn't yet done for us, don't they? I know ... it's incredibly selfish of us to feel that way, isn't it? And yes - I'm sure we're all fully away of the scriptural command to "rejoice with those who rejoice" ... that's what we should be doing and we know it. And yet, I think there's something about being reminded that God does good and He does do miracles, and then witnessing the reality of that in the life of another ... that makes us to ask that all important question: "Why not me, God?"

First, a challenge for you ... let's learn to "thank" more and complain less. That's what we do, isn't it? God does something great and we barely take time to say "thank you" before we start in with complaining about what God hasn't yet done and/or the prayer that God still hasn't answered. "God, you healed him ... yeah, that's great and all, but don't You remember I still have this problem?" "A huge financial miracle? Answered prayer? Need met? Yeah ... good, good; but what about this thing in my life, God? When are You going to do something about that?" "Wow! God, you really blessed them beyond belief. I don't understand why you never do stuff like that for me ... I sure wish you would! (Hint! Hint!)" Sound familiar? Truth be told, we've all expressed those sentiments way too often, haven't we? How about let's make a change then? No doubt you have problem situations in your life even right now as you read this; and no doubt it would be great if God would have taken care of those yesterday ... but He did something else instead. How about today, though, instead of complaining and being overly concerned about the "still-to-be-done" things ... how about we join the hosts of heaven in making today a day of praise. The miracle may not have been yours; but it nevertheless reveals a God who is still powerful enough to heal, gracious enough to provide, and loving enough to bless ... and for that, He forever deserves our praise and our thanksgiving!

Second, an encouragement for you ... what God has done for others, He wants to use to strengthen and encourage your faith for what you still need Him to do for you. I think sometimes we go through circumstances in life - we're praying for something, we're praying for a miracle - I mean, we're praying and praying and praying ... but nothing happens. All of a sudden the faith we had when we first started praying is a little bit shaken ... and we begin to wonder, and worry, we question, we doubt - ultimately we struggle, our faith struggles. Maybe like me, in those moments then you've prayed something like this: "God, if you could just show me that You're doing something. God, even if not the answer, if You could just give part of the answer ... if you could just give me a sign that my miracle is on the way - then everything would be okay; then my faith would be strengthened again; then I'd be able to for sure make it through. Just a sign, God ... that's all I need." I've prayed that prayer ... just recently, in fact. And when I did, I felt God speak to my heart concerning the situation I was struggling with ... He reminded me of one of the miracle stories that I've shared with you and used it then to say to me, "Here's your sign!" And Wow! what that did to my faith! All of a sudden I was reminded that God knew all about my faith struggle ... and in fact, not only did He know about it, He had an answer for it. More than that, God answered my prayer ... by way of the testimonies happening all around me, He reminded me of how He still works miracles and of how I could then continue to trust Him for the miracle I was still praying for and waiting on. Do you need a miracle? Does it seem like nothing is happening? Do you need a sign then? I think God would invite you to look around you; maybe even to read again what He's done for the three folks I told you about ... and I sincerely believe that as you would do that, God would speak to your heart, "Here's your sign!" And I pray that God's response would do for you what it did for me: restore hope, bring encouragement, and revive faith!

Lord, thanks for being so good and so great! Help me to have an attitude of gratitude ... even when there's still lots I'm waiting for You to do for me. And Lord, all around me are signs that point to Your miracle-working power ... help me not to miss them; especially when a sign is what I'm most needing to see. Amen.

Be Ready (May 22 - A.M. Service)

In regards to his infamous May 21st “end-of-the-world” prediction, Harold Camping is quoted as saying: “God has given sooo much information in the Bible about this, and so many proofs, and so many signs, that we know it is absolutely going to happen without any question at all. There’s nothing in the Bible that holds a candle to the amount of information to this tremendous truth of the end of the world. I would be absolutely in rebellion against God if I thought anything other than it is absolutely going to happen without any question.”

Harold Camping was obviously wrong . . . and now, his May 21st prediction will simply take its place as the most recent in a long line of equally errant predictions regarding the return of Christ and the end of the world.

Isn’t it true that whenever there’s thought or discussion concerning the end of the world, the first thing we want to know: When is it all going to happen? We may wonder about the how, we may speculate about the after . . . but what we really want to know is the when! No wonder then that the entire world has been more than intrigued by what Mr. Camping had to say. What if he’s right after all? What if he’s figured out the answer to the question that plagues us all? What if he really knows the day and the hour of the end?

Well, he didn’t did he? And for the record, he doesn’t . . . and neither does anyone else!

You see, what we’re so desperate to know . . . God makes unknowable. Jesus said in Matthew 24, “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son.” In Acts 1, Jesus told his disciples that the “timing” business was God’s business, not theirs.

Simply put, the Bible makes it abundantly clear: you can’t know the when . . . but you can be ready for it!

Let’s be ready!

1. Remember the Certainty of Eternity
Eternity is our destiny!

Regardless of how we used to think when we were young, we’re not immortal, are we? The Bible reminds us that it is “appointed unto man once to die” . . . in light of that, it then goes on to ask us: “How can you be so sure about your life? It is nothing more than a mist that appears for only a little while before it disappears.” We typically paraphrase that last bit into the simple reminder that we are not promised tomorrow. Statisticians tell us that 155,000 people in the world will experience the reality of those scriptures sometime today . . . their life here will end and eternity will begin. For the rest of us . . . we await what we know we cannot escape.

For Christians, there is the hope of avoiding death by way of Christ’s return. In Thessalonians, Paul writes of a day when the trumpet call of God will sound; and all those then that have died in Christ along with all those that are alive in Him will be “caught up” to be with the Lord in heaven. It’ll be a glorious moment that could happen at any moment.

Ultimately, either death will come or Christ will return . . . one way or the other though, there is coming a day like May 21st was supposed to be – a day where our life here ends and our eternity begins.

It could be today . . . be ready then for that; be ready for eternity!

2. Let Your Life be Impacted by Eternity
The certainty of eternity should make a huge difference in our lives . . . knowing that we are not promised tomorrow, should have an incredible impact on our today. Does it?

Are you prepared to leave this world? If you left it today, would it be without regret . . . without feelings of wishing you had done this, or wishing you had taken care of that? What if you don’t have another opportunity to mend that relationship? What if you don’t get another chance to tell that person how much you love them, how much you care about them? What if you don’t get any more time to spend with them? You see the impact of living life in light of eternity?

Never mind leaving this world, how about this . . . are you prepared for the next? The Bible asks the same question this way: What profit is there if you gain the whole world and lose eternal life? So, how about it? Have you done what God commands and demands that you do in order to be in good standing with Him? Are you prepared to stand before Him and give and give an account of every action, every word, every thought throughout your life? Have you done enough for Him? Have you done anything for Him? I know . . . that’s what tomorrow is for, right? We’ll do all that then, won’t we? But what if you don’t have a tomorrow? Again . . . do you see the impact of living life in light of eternity?

Eternity is coming – it could be today . . . let your today be different then!

Be ready . . . live ready!

3. Set Your Desires on Eternity
Remember, Christian . . . this is not our home – we are pilgrims here; we’re just passing through!

And so then, may we know again what it is to live life looking upward . . . watching and waiting! May we remember that it’s not about the moth-eaten and rust-corrupted treasures of this world, but rather instead the treasures that we’d store up for ourselves in our real home of heaven. May we persevere in our faith, knowing that the unfathomable glories of our eternity will far surpass the sufferings of our today. May we find ourselves increasingly becoming less and less comfortable in having to be here and more and more comfortable in the expectation and hope of being there.

In Revelation 22, Jesus told John that He was coming soon . . . that eternity was fast approaching. And John, who was ready for eternity and who was no doubt desiring to be there, responded to Jesus’ revelation by saying, “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!” May our readiness for eternity and our desire for it be like John’s . . . so that his prayer becomes then our prayer – “Come, Lord Jesus! Come!”

God's Great Peace (May 15 - A.M. Service)

Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks. And God’s peace, which is so great we
cannot understand it, will keep your hearts and minds
quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

Beware of “peace-killers”!

In a life filled with so many “peace-killers” how much more we need, long for, and should pursue God’s great peace . . . how much more priceless then God’s great peace becomes!

Peace can seem to be so incredibly elusive . . . so terribly hard to find.

And yet Paul found it . . . oddly enough in a Roman prison cell!

His prison-found peace, will teach us a lot about God’s peace, and most of all help us to find it! After all, if Paul could find it while chained to dungeon walls, then we can find it irregardless of our situation. And if God’s peace was peace for Paul in his situation, then it can be peace for us in any and all of our situations in life.

1. Don’t Worry
Philippians 4:6 – “Do not worry about anything . . .”

Quit being anxious! Quit worrying!

Maybe peace is always so elusive, because we’re always so inclined to worry! By definition, peace and worry cannot exist together - you will never have peace as long as you continue to worry.

Paul had a lot to worry about . . . but he says, “Don’t worry!”

Maybe you have lots to worry about . . . but to find and live in God’s peace, you must learn to practice the discipline of worry-free living.

There’s no shortage of things to worry about . . . and yet the message is this: “Don’t worry about anything!”

And maybe no wonder . . . after all, worry doesn’t do any good, does it? It doesn’t make us feel any better. It doesn’t help the situation. It doesn’t do any good at all. No wonder then, Paul’s instruction: Don’t do it!

2. Pray and Praise
Philippians 4:6 – “Do not worry about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

To experience God's great peace, it’s not enough to empty your life of worry – you also have to learn to fill it with prayer and praise. Prayer and praise in everything!

In your little anxious moments, in your big monster panic attack moments of life . . . instead of trying to fix everything, instead of becoming so anxious and upset, instead of shrinking back in paralyzing fear . . . spend time in prayer and praise!

There’s nothing like God’s presence in prayer and a God-focus in praise that will bring God’s great peace into your heart and mind!

3. Experience Peace
When you do Philippians 4:6 . . . when you replace anxiety and worry with prayer and praise . . . then you get to Philippians 4:7 – “And God’s peace, which is so great we cannot understand it, will keep your hearts and minds quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus.”

God’s great peace . . . it transcends understanding!

It's an absence of anxiety and pressure even in the midst of life's anxiety and pressure filled situations. It’s a peace that comes from knowing we can cast all our cares and worries on Christ! It’s a peace that comes from knowing that God is in control! It’s a peace that comes from knowing that God is not only in control, but that He’s also on your side! He is for you . . . and He’s always working in your life for your good!

God’s peace . . . it’s wonderful peace; it’s “peace that sweeps over your soul in fathomless billows of love”!
